Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy that is selectively absorbed by melanin (the pigment) in the hair follicle. The heat generated destroys the follicle's ability to produce new hair, without damaging the surrounding skin.
Because hair grows in cycles, only follicles in the active growth phase (anagen) are effectively treated in any single session. This is why multiple sessions, spaced 4–8 weeks apart, are required to catch all follicles across their different growth phases.
At Revive Aesthetics, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, a dual-wavelength system with both Alexandrite (755nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm) lasers, allowing us to safely and effectively treat a wide range of skin tones including darker complexions.
Note: Laser hair removal is least effective on fine, light (blonde, red, gray) hair due to low melanin content. We discuss candidacy and expected results at your consultation.

Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your session (not the day of). Do not wax, thread, or pluck hair for 4 weeks prior, the follicle must be present for the laser to target it. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for 2 weeks before treatment.
The area is cleansed and a cooling gel is applied. Your provider works systematically across the zone using the GentleMax Pro. The device delivers a burst of cooling air with each laser pulse, making the sensation (often described as a rubber band snap) quite tolerable. Small areas take 10–15 minutes; full legs or full body may take up to 60–90 minutes.
The treated area may appear red and feel warm for a few hours, similar to a mild sunburn. This typically resolves within 24 hours. You can return to most activities immediately. Avoid sun exposure, heat, and exercise for 24–48 hours post-treatment.
Treated hairs will appear to "grow" for 1–3 weeks post-session before shedding. This is the dead follicle being pushed out, not new growth. Gentle exfoliation and a soft loofah can help facilitate shedding.
Sessions are scheduled 4–8 weeks apart (shorter intervals for facial areas, longer for body). After 6–8 sessions, most patients achieve 80–95% permanent reduction. Occasional maintenance sessions (once per year or less) may be needed, particularly for hormonally influenced hair.
With average high temperatures above 100°F for much of the year and a lifestyle built around pools, outdoor dining, and year-round warm-weather activities, Scottsdale residents shave and maintain unwanted hair more consistently than almost anywhere else in the country. Laser hair removal is one of the highest-ROI cosmetic investments you can make in a warm climate, the time and money spent on waxing, razors, and ingrown hair treatments adds up significantly over time. Many of our patients across Scottsdale, McCormick Ranch, and Gainey Ranch begin their series in the fall and winter (when sun exposure is naturally lower and easier to limit post-treatment) and are hair-free for the following summer season. We plan your series timeline to align with these seasonal considerations.
Laser hair removal produces permanent reduction, not always 100% elimination. Most patients achieve 80–95% reduction after a complete series. Some very fine or light hairs may persist, and hormonally influenced hair (PCOS, hormonal changes) may require periodic maintenance. However, the vast majority of patients are delighted with the dramatic reduction in hair and maintenance time.
Yes, with the right laser. Our GentleMax Pro includes a 1064nm Nd:YAG laser, which is the gold standard for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI). It bypasses melanin in the skin to target the follicle safely. We always perform a patch test before your first session to confirm the appropriate settings for your specific skin tone.
Most patients require 6–8 sessions for 80–90% permanent reduction. The exact number depends on your hair color and thickness, the area being treated, and your hormonal profile. We assess your progress at each session and adjust as needed.
Sun exposure should be avoided for at least 2 weeks before and after each session. The skin is more photosensitive post-treatment, and tanning before treatment reduces the contrast between skin and hair (reducing efficacy and increasing risk). In sunny Scottsdale, this means planning your treatment schedule thoughtfully, we'll help you do this.
Medical-grade laser hair removal performed by trained providers is considered very safe. At Revive Aesthetics, all laser treatments are performed by licensed and certified laser technicians under physician oversight. We perform a patch test on all new patients before beginning a full series.
Complimentary consultation and patch test included. We'll assess your candidacy, review your target areas, and build a treatment plan that fits your timeline and goals.
