How Microneedling Works

Microneedling (collagen induction therapy) uses a device with fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. These tiny injuries trigger your body's wound-healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin without significant damage to the surrounding tissue.

The result is a gradual improvement in skin texture, tone, firmness, and scar appearance over 4–8 weeks as the new collagen matures. Professional microneedling reaches depths of 0.5–2.5mm. Far beyond what any at-home roller can safely or effectively achieve.

At Revive Aesthetics, we use the SkinPen (the first FDA-cleared microneedling device) with single-use sterile cartridges for every patient.

What Can Microneedling Address?

Acne Scarring

Rolling, boxcar, and icepick scars all respond to microneedling. A series is required for meaningful improvement.

Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Stimulates collagen to soften early signs of aging and improve overall skin firmness.

Enlarged Pores

Collagen production around pore walls can visibly tighten their appearance over time.

Uneven Texture

Rough or bumpy skin texture improves as new, organized collagen replaces damaged tissue.

Hyperpigmentation

When combined with topical brightening agents, microneedling can improve dark spots and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Stretch Marks

Effective on stretch marks on the abdomen, thighs, and other areas when performed in a series.

What to Expect at Revive Aesthetics

1

Consultation & Skin Assessment

We evaluate your skin type, concerns, and goals. We'll discuss the recommended depth, number of sessions, and any add-ons (such as PRP or growth factor serums) that may enhance your results. Patients on certain medications (retinoids, isotretinoin) may need to pause before treatment.

2

Numbing (30–45 Minutes)

A medical-grade topical anesthetic is applied and allowed to fully take effect. This significantly reduces discomfort during the procedure. Most patients find professional microneedling comfortable with proper numbing.

3

Microneedling Treatment (30–45 Minutes)

Your provider works systematically across the treatment area using the SkinPen device, adjusting needle depth by zone. The face typically takes 30–45 minutes. A serum is applied throughout to facilitate product penetration through the micro-channels.

4

Post-Treatment Care

Your skin will appear red and feel warm (similar to a moderate sunburn) for 24–72 hours. You'll leave with specific aftercare instructions: gentle cleanser only, no active ingredients (retinol, acids, vitamin C) for 5–7 days, and strict SPF use. Mineral makeup can typically be applied after 24 hours.

5

Results Timeline

Initial skin smoothness improves within 2–4 weeks. Collagen remodeling continues for up to 3 months per session. For concerns like acne scarring, meaningful visible improvement typically requires 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

One session produces noticeable improvement in glow and texture. Meaningful correction of scars, deep lines, or significant concerns requires a series. Here's our general recommendation by concern:

Why Scottsdale Patients Benefit Especially from Microneedling

Arizona's intense UV environment (299+ sunny days per year in the Phoenix metro) makes sun damage, uneven texture, and accelerated skin aging among the most common concerns we see at Revive Aesthetics. Microneedling addresses the visible signs of cumulative sun exposure by stimulating the production of new, organized collagen to replace photo-damaged tissue. It's particularly effective when combined with consistent SPF use and professional skincare, a combination we build into every patient's treatment plan. For patients in our Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Arcadia-area patient base, we often recommend scheduling sessions in fall and winter months (October–March) when sun exposure is easier to limit during recovery.

Microneedling FAQs

Is professional microneedling better than at-home rollers?

Significantly. At-home dermarollers use fixed, shorter needles (typically 0.2–0.3mm) that can cause inconsistent damage and don't penetrate deeply enough to trigger meaningful collagen induction. Professional devices like the SkinPen use sterile, single-use cartridges, adjustable depth (up to 2.5mm), and motorized stamping motion, producing consistent micro-channels with far lower risk of infection or uneven results.

Does microneedling hurt?

With proper topical numbing, most patients describe the sensation as a mild scratching or warmth, not pain. Some areas (close to the hairline, around the nose) are more sensitive. We allow full numbing time before beginning and can adjust treatment parameters for sensitive patients.

What is the downtime for microneedling?

Redness and mild swelling are expected for 24–72 hours. Skin may feel tight and slightly rough (like a sunburn) during this period. Most patients feel comfortable in public within 24–48 hours with mineral makeup. We recommend scheduling treatment when you can avoid heavy sun exposure for at least 5–7 days post-treatment.

Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?

Yes. Microneedling is commonly combined with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for enhanced collagen stimulation, growth factor serums for accelerated recovery, and chemical peels for comprehensive skin renewal. We'll discuss combination approaches at your consultation based on your specific goals.

Who is not a good candidate for microneedling?

Patients with active acne breakouts, skin infections, rosacea flares, open wounds, or history of keloid scarring may not be appropriate candidates. Patients on isotretinoin (Accutane) should wait 6 months after stopping before treatment. Pregnant patients should wait until after delivery. We review all contraindications at your consultation.
